Nurturing Our Environment: Sustainability
Protecting a Fragile Ecosystem
A clean environment is vital for human well-being. However, poverty, lack of awareness, and harsh climatic conditions have led to significant environmental destruction in Kasaala.
Key Issues:
Shortage of Firewood: The main source of fuel.
Deforestation: Primarily due to charcoal burning and clearing land for farming.
Soil Degradation: Caused by unsustainable farming methods and loss of vegetation cover.
Loss of Forage: Impacts livestock, a key livelihood component.

Promoting Sustainable Practices
TECDI is working to educate the local community and demonstrate practical solutions:
Demonstration Farm
Established by founder Simon Musila, showcasing:
- Dryland Tree Planting: 100 Mukau trees (Melia volkensii) planted in 2008 (termite-resistant, provides timber, forage, firewood).
- Perennial Grass Planting: Maasai Love Grass (Eragrostis superba) established over 3ha in 2019 (controls erosion, provides forage, bee pollen).
- Community Learning: Serves as an educational site (~10 visitors annually).
Future Plans
Expand education on rehabilitating degraded areas by planting local drought-resistant grasses and Acacia trees.
Help Us Grow a Greener Kasaala
TECDI is seeking funding to support community meetings and expand awareness campaigns about tree and grass farming.
