Building Foundations: Infrastructure
Why Infrastructure Matters in Rural Kenya
Many schools and communities in rural areas like Kasaala lack basic infrastructure… This includes classrooms, sanitation, dormitories, science labs, desks, and digital resources.
In Kasaala’s four day-secondary schools, students often learn in crowded conditions and walk long distances (5-10km each way).
Key Needs:
Libraries/Digital Centers: Vital for research and learning.
Dormitories: To reduce long walks, improve safety (especially girls), and allow study time.
Science Labs: Crucial for quality science education.
Classrooms: Additional space needed to reduce overcrowding.
What We’ve Built Together
TECDI, often in collaboration with partners like BASIK (UK), has worked to address these needs:
James Ndonyi Memorial Secondary School
Construction of three classrooms (2014-2016) and one science laboratory (2018-2019), significantly improving the learning environment. Funded primarily by BASIK.
Kasaala Secondary School
Purchase and installation of a petrol-powered maize grinding machine (posho mill) in 2018.
Kivuti Primary School
Construction of a four-door latrine building (2007).
Help Us Build the Future: Current Needs
Significant needs remain. TECDI is seeking funding for:
- Eight (8) Dormitories: Across four secondary schools (Est. US$ 20,000 each).
- Four (4) Science Labs: To equip all secondary schools properly (Est. US$ 20,000 each).
- Ten (10) Additional Classrooms: To alleviate overcrowding (Est. US$ 9,000 each).
- Community Libraries/Digital Centers: (Cost TBD).
Donors supporting these projects can have facilities named after them (with permission).
